Off to the Alps Again – October 2019

Our day of adventure to the Uri Alps in central Switzerland included train and cable car rides, lots of sunshine, beautiful mountains covered with snow, and a very pleasurable time with Raoul, father of our friend David.

We took several Swiss Rail trains to reach Engleberg, a resort town with an elevation of 996 meters and the starting point for our 30 minute ascent up Titlis Mountain.

The first leg of our 12 kilometer journey was in a cog rail train, filled beyond capacity with excited visitors like us.

Next we rode through and above the fog in a standard cable car, which briefly stopped at a midpoint station before concluding at Stand Station.

And the best part of our journey up to 3028 meters was traveling in the world’s first revolving cable car. We had incredibly clear, long distance views of the steep alps with many peaks decorated with snow.

We shuffled through the slippery, 150 meter-long Glacier Cave that reportedly has ice up to 5,000 years old. The blue lights enhanced the cold experience, with cave temperatures at -1.5 C.

The most memorable part of our day was traversing the Titlis Cliff Walk, the highest suspension bridge in all of Europe. Even though it was only 150 steps across the steel bridge, it was quite nerve wracking because the bridge swayed and it was a LONG way (500 meters) down to the ground. The three of us weren’t the only ones displaying apprehension, as most of the Cliff Walkers looked quite uncomfortable and desired to hold onto cables on both sides of the one meter-wide bridge.

Yes, there were restaurants and shops on mountain top, but we spent most of our time outside exploring the area, taking photos at the viewing platforms, and watching skiers and snowboarders enjoy the beginning of ski season. A couple of skiers even “walked” up a steep slope and then skied down.

We had perfect weather and fantastic views from Titlis Mountain!
