Colorful Buildings & A Castle – August 2020
We travelled 20 kilometers by bus to Samobor, a medieval, baroque-style town just an hour west of Zagreb. The quiet settlement, a popular excursion for big city residents, is home to 15,000 people.
Parish Church of Saint Anastasia – Even though the yellow building was constructed in the 1670s, church records date back to 1334. Not only is it one of the rare early Baroque churches in Croatia, but the structure is also the most photographed location inside the town boundaries. We took pictures of just one of the seven altars and several beautiful windows.
Center of Town – Colorful buildings, cafes, and shops dominate King Tomislav Square. The Gradna River, which more resembles a trickling brook, flows through the town and local officials annually stock the waterway with trout.
Franciscan Church of the Assumption of Blessed Virgin Mary – We took a quick peak inside this Gothic church, located just a short walk from Tomislav Square. Fire destroyed the original 13th century building and the structure we saw was completed in the 1730s.
Samobor Castle – We walked along the river and then hiked up Tepec Hill to explore the ancient castle, which was originally part of a separate town for nobles in the 13th century. Only a very small portion of the castle guard towers, chapel, halls, and houses have been restored. And Jackie Chan’s film Armour of God, features some of the castle’s aging stonework.
